'Miscarriage is a loss of pregnancy before 23 weeks. There are probably many reasons why a miscarriage may happen. There are many types of infections that can cause an increased risk of causing miscarriage. Woman who gets one of these infections will have a pregnancy loss. The infection that causes miscarriage may be bacterial, viral or parasitic. Bacterial infections include bacterial vaginosis, clamydial infections and gonorrheal infection are common between 10 and 50 years. Patients with these infection suffer from foul smelling vaginal discharge and irritation while passing urine and itching, swelling and redness of the vulval region. Bacterial vaginosis is associated with increased risk of 2nd trimester abortion. Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with antibiotics. Clamydiasis is another bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted and cause pelvic inflammation and may cause 1st trimester abortion. Gonorrhoea is also a bacterial infection which is sexually transmitted and it is often asymptomatic and if left untreated infection have an increased risk of miscarriage and may cause increased risk of tubal pregnancy also. Food borne bacterial infection potentially preventable cause of miscarriage. Why is to be vigilant about what you are eating during pregnancy to reduce the risk of miscarriage. Listeria, Salmonella are the bacterias responsible for the food poisoning. That may cause early abortions. Unpasteurised milk and cheese, uncooked poultry products can cause food infections. Viral infections like Rubella virus, Parvo virus, Cytomegalo virus are also associated with miscarriage. Rubella is a viral infection also called German measles. Rubella infection during pregnancy in women who are not immune pose a high risk of miscarriage and congenital birth defect. They should take MMR vaccine before conception. It is important to test women for immunity against Rubella as a part of neonatal testing. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a virus called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite develops inside the cats and later they can infect the animal and also the humans. Toxoplasma infection acquired during pregnancy may cause birth defect and miscarriage in the patient. Woman with malarial infection are also at a high risk of miscarriage.'
